WHEN JOSEPH BONAPARTE LIVED IN NEW JERSEY - A FULBRIGHT PRESENTATION
Saturday, October 19, 2002

The New Jersey Chapter of the Fulbright Association presents "When Joseph Bonaparte Lived in New Jersey: His Artistic life and Contributions", a talk and slide presentation by Dr. Regina Mezei to be held on Saturday, October 19th, 2002 at 12.30 P.M. in the Vaugh Eames Building at Kean University, Morris Avenue, Union (NJ). Refreshments will be served, guitar music by Louis Melchor. Reservations required by October 10th, admittance $7.

The lecture will be focused on the American estate, art collection, furnishings, and other properties of Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's older brother. After Waterloo, while Napoleon was dying in forced exile on St. Helena, Joseph came into voluntary exile to the United States, buying large acreage in New Jersey, and making his home in Bordentown for some eighteen years. The presentation will also describe the paintings of his daughter Charlotte and cultural contributions of other relatives. Joseph's sojourn in America coincided with a classical revival in European art, architecture and design that was transferred to America, a young republic seeking to ratify its political position in the world through artistic development. He made significant contributions to this cultural flowering in early nineteenth century America.

Dr. Regina Mezei is Professor of ESL, Spanish and History at Mercer County Community College and Vice President of the New Jersey Fulbright Chapter. She grew up in Bordentown (NJ).

The event is organized by the New Jersey Chapter of the Fulbright Association, a non-profit organization. The Fulbright program was launched in 1946, with a mission to promote understanding of different cultures through international, educational, and cultural exchange programs.
